Keralam asks Vigilance to probe 2006 suicide case linked to Gyanesh
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 5 -- Keralam home minister Ramesh Chennithala on Sunday ordered a Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) inquiry into alleged irregularities in a 2006 road construction project and the suicide of a Malaysian engineer when current Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was the then secretary of the public works department.
Chennithala said the probe was ordered after he received a complaint on Saturday from Malayankeezhu Venugopal, a Congress leader and member of the party's state executive.
The investigation will be a continuation of a preliminary VACB inquiry conducted in 2006, which got stalled after Kumar left the state on a central deputation that year, the minister said.
The inquiry will probe corruption and bribery allegations linked to the upgradation of MC Road, a 240-km-long arterial road connecting Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts, under the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP), implemented by the Indo-Malaysian consortium PATI-BEL and supported by the World Bank. Kumar then served as the public works department (PWD) secretary, overseeing the project. The allegations arose following the death by suicide of Malaysian national Lee See Been, the chief project officer of PATI-BEL, in Kuala Lumpur on November 11, 2006, said the minister. "Two suicide notes were written by Been, one to PATI director and another to his wife. Gyanesh Kumar was named in one of the suicide notes," said Chennithala.
Responding to questions about the allegations, Chennithala said, "I haven't seen the suicide note myself; this is information reported through the media," he clarified....
