Mumbai, April 3 -- The Mumbai Traffic Police seized illegal beacon lights of various colours and three sirens from 80 vehicles during a special drive conducted on Wednesday and Thursday against unauthorised use of flashing lights on private vehicles. Officials said the police had been receiving frequent complaints about private vehicle owners installing red, blue, or yellow beacon lights on their vehicles in violation of rules. Taking note of the issue, the traffic police launched a citywide drive, stating that such installations create confusion among the public and on-duty personnel, enable impersonation of VIPs, and allow vehicles to bypass traffic congestion unlawfully. The drive was led by the assistant commissioner of police (south-central region), along with teams from the Marine Drive and Bandra traffic divisions. Several vehicles were inspected, leading to the seizure of illegal dome lights and sirens. Police said strict penal action has been initiated against the drivers and vehicle owners under the Motor Vehicles Act. Officials added that the maximum permissible fine will be imposed on violators. In serious cases, the regional transport office (RTO) may be asked to cancel the vehicle's registration, and criminal proceedings could also be initiated. The Mumbai Traffic Police has urged citizens to report such violations with photographs via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle or the traffic helpline number....
