Former UNLF chairman urges dialogue to end ethnic conflict
IMPHAL, July 7 -- Two Assam Rifles personnel killed and several injured in an ambush carried out by unknown armed miscreants on Monday in Manipur's Ukhrul distict, police said, with chief minister Yumnam Khemchand condemning the killing of security forces.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 1.30 pm at Nungshangohong village in Ukhrul district, around 16 km away from the district town. During the incident two Assam Rifles personnel identified as warrant officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman CM Singh who was a driver of 40 Assam Rifles Shangshak battalion, both residents of Uttrakhand, sustained bullet injuries which later succumbed to injuries.
Manipur police in a separate statement issued on the same day operations are underway to neutralise the militants. However, it is yet to confirm which armed groups were responsible and involved during the ambush.
Preliminary investigations indicated that suspected militants had planted three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along both sides of a bridge on the convoy's route, police said. As the convoy crossed the area, two of the IEDs exploded, followed by heavy gunfire from multiple directions in what officials described as a coordinated attack.
Assam Rifles personnel immediately retaliated, leading to an intense exchange of fire that lasted for nearly an hour. During the subsequent sanitisation and search operation, security forces recovered one unexploded IED from the site.
The chief minister conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families....
