Madurai, April 7 -- A Madurai court on Monday gave the death penalty to nine policemen over the custodial torture of a man and his son, which lead to their death, terming the case as rarest of rare. P Jayaraj and his son J Bennix were assaulted by the convicted policemen in Sathankulam for allegedly keeping their mobile shop open in violation of Covid norms. First additional district and sessions judge G Muthukumaran observed that those entrusted with protecting the public had committed a crime that shook the collective conscience of society.
