Mumbai, April 20 -- A fire broke out early Sunday morning at ground-floor shops in Umarikar Building near Crawford Market, prompting a swift response from the fire brigade and other agencies. The blaze was reported at 6.20am and later classified as a Level-I fire. No injuries were reported. Fire brigade teams, along with police, BEST staff and ward personnel, were deployed to contain the blaze. The fire was limited to about four or five shops but sent thick smoke into adjoining units. Officials said preliminary findings suggest a short circuit may have sparked the fire. Multiple shops in the area were gutted, according to an official, though the exact number of affected shops was still being assessed at the time of going to press. "The fire was confined to four to five shops on the ground floor, with smoke logging reported in approximately four to five shops," a BMC official said. Firefighters battled the blaze for over four hours. Disaster management authorities said it was extinguished at 10.30am, but fire officials noted that cooling operations were still in progress later in the morning. HTC...
