CID questions VSR owner over crash
Pune, March 6 -- The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday questioned VK Singh, owner of VSR Ventures, the company that operated the aircraft involved in the fatal plane crash at Baramati on January 28 that killed then deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. Singh arrived at the CID headquarters in Pune around noon and left the building late in the evening.
"VK Singh's interrogation is a crucial step in the probe and will help piece together the chain of events that led to one of the most high-profile aviation tragedies in Maharashtra recent years," a CID official said. A second CID official said Singh's statement was being recorded, but refused to disclose details.
Sources said the investigating agency had sent a detailed questionnaire to VSR Ventures before summoning Singh.
Meanwhile, a preliminary 22-page report on the crash submitted by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) stated that visibility at the time of landing was below the required level. It also highlighted faded runway markings and the presence of loose gravel on the runway surface as potential contributing factors in the incident.
The findings triggered a political controversy.
NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar alleged that the report attempted to shield VSR Ventures from scrutiny even as he claimed that it validated some of the concerns he had raised earlier -- such as, the pilot assigned to operate the aircraft was changed at the last moment; the aircraft was carrying more fuel than required; and the airport area had been reconnoitred prior to the accident. He also criticised the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) over "fundamental mistakes" in the report.
On Thursday, Maharashtra NCP president Sunil Tatkare said they too were not satisfied with the preliminary report.
"The report has errors and hence a probe needs to be conducted covering all doubts raised by everyone so far," he stressed. All legislators of the party would soon meet chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to push for a detailed and transparent probe, he said.
NCP insiders revealed that family members of the deceased leader are also planning to meet prime minister Narendra Modi in the coming days....
