MUMBAI, Aug. 11 -- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) booked the husband and in-laws of a 28-year-old woman, who allegedly died by suicide in February 2023, for alleged harassment and abuse that abetted the desperate act. The CBI registered the case on August 4 against the woman's husband, his parents, two sisters and a brother-in-law under sections pertaining to abetment of suicide, dowry death, cheating, husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty and criminal breach of trust under the Indian Penal Code and the Dowry Prohibition Act The agency took over the case from Thane police as per an April 16 order of the Bombay High Court. The case's complainant - the victim's father - stated in his complaint that his daughter married the 28-year-old accused husband in November 2021. He alleged that soon after the wedding, the son-in-law started demanding a flat and money from them. He also alleged that his daughter was frequently assaulted by her husband under the influence of alcohol and was forced to undergo an abortion in November 2022 against her will. The complaint states that on February 24, 2023, the son-in-law called him at 9:30pm to inform that his daughter was rushed to a hospital after she attempted suicide, where the doctors declared her "brought dead". The complainant claimed that the continuous physical, verbal and mental abuses by the husband and his family members ultimately drove his daughter to die by suicide....
