MUMBAI, Aug. 9 -- In the face of Mumbai's depleting green spaces, the Mumbai Architects Collective (MAC), comprising 127 top urban planning professionals, has urged the state government and BMC to protect the city's remaining green and public spaces, while criticizing the rising commercialisation of parks, salt pans, mangroves and the Mahalaxmi Racecourse. The collective expressed its concern through a letter of appeal to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and municipal commissioner Ashwini Bhide on Friday. Highlighting that Mumbai has only 1.58 sqm public open space per person, compared with 31.68 sqm in London and 26.4 sqm in New York, the group argued that these ecological assets are vital infra that perform critical functions such as flood mitigation, stormwater absorption, and temperature regulation.
