Mumbai, Sept. 1 -- Social activist Anna Hazare, 89, was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Bombay Hospital on Monday evening after developing an acute viral infection, severe dehydration and renal failure. Hazare was brought to Mumbai in a cardiac ambulance from his native Ralegan Siddhi in western Maharashtra. Dr Gautam Bhansali, the doctor treating Hazare, told Hindustan Times that his condition was stable and that investigations were underway. "Investigations are on. Anna is stable," Bhansali said. Villagers from Ralegan Siddhi who look after Hazare have reached Bombay Hospital and are staying with him during his treatment. Hazare, a former Indian Army soldier and one of the country's prominent social activists, has faced age-related health complications in recent years, doctors said.
