MUMBAI, Oct. 6 -- An 87-year-old retired Central government officer lost Rs.5.10 crore after cyber frauds posing as representatives of a Switzerland-based wealth management firm lured him into a fake share investment scheme, showing inflated returns of nearly Rs.32 crore on a bogus investment app to persuade him to keep putting in more money. In July, a woman calling herself Sonal Naik contacted the complainant and added him to a WhatsApp group for high-net-worth individuals. Group members regularly shared fake profit screenshots to build credibility and convince the victims of the scheme's legitimacy. The Malad-based pensioner was instructed to download a specific mobile application to trade. Between July 21 and September 27, he made 43 online transactions totaling Rs.5.10 crore into various bank accounts provided by the frauds. The scam unravelled on September 27 when the application displayed a fake account balance of Rs.32 crore as returns against his invested money. When the senior citizen attempted to withdraw a portion of his funds, the scammers demanded a 10% commission plus taxes. The victim suggested that the commission be deducted from the Rs.32 crore displayed in his account, the frauds refused. Realising he had been duped, he approached the police....
