2 kids killed, 1,000 displaced in blaze
India, April 17 -- Two children, one aged two years and the second six months, died in a massive fire that engulfed a slum cluster in Lucknow, leaving around 1,000 people homeless, police said on Thursday. The fire, which started on Wednesday evening, rapidly engulfed about 280 shanties and reduced belongings to ashes. Around 1,000 people, mostly domestic workers and daily wage earners, were left homeless, officials said. Deputy commissioner of police (east) Diksha Sharma said that the bodies of the deceased were found late on Wednesday night and that the parents have identified the bodies. Officials said at least 20 fire tenders were rushed to douse the blaze. Firemen also recovered around 50 LPG cylinders at site and dumped them into a nearby drain with police claiming that many of them exploded during the relief and rescue operation.
