10 dead, 3 hurt as illegal Bhiwandi bldg collapses
Thane, Aug. 1 -- Ten people died and three others were injured when a portion of an unauthorised, dilapidated building collapsed in Bhiwandi late on Thursday night. The crash occurred only hours after cracks appeared in Kohinoor Apartments, prompting the owner to get a contractor to hurriedly prop up the crumbling structure. Survivors claim the repair work only aggravated the damage, hastening the collapse.
After the repairs began, residents assumed the danger had passed. "Residents stopped evacuating the building and some who had already left returned," said Ramvilas Ram, a powerloom worker who survived the crash. "Then, around 11:20pm, the building suddenly crashed."
Civic officials say the building was only 15 years old and its occupants and owner - identified as Bilal Khan - had been served notices several times, warning them that the building was unsafe to live in. An FIR was registered against Khan and a contractor identified only as Shankar for culpable homicide. Police are searching for both the accused, who are on the run.
