1 killed, 2 injured in fresh violence in Manipur village
Imphal, June 14 -- One man was killed and two other men were injured in a fresh gunfight near Langka Naga village in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on Saturday, police officers aware of the matter said. All three of them belong to the Kuki community, they added.
Officers said that the incident took place around 8.30 am, when a group of men allegedly opened fire on farmers working in paddy fields near the village.
Village guards retaliated, triggering an exchange of fire that lasted nearly four hours, said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
The officer added that three of the alleged attackers sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight. "One of them, identified as Jangngam Hangshing of Lhouthang village in Kangpokpi district, later died. The injured were identified as Lalminlen Lhouvum and Thanguhou Kipgen. They are undergoing treatment," the officer said.
Villagers alleged that the attackers fired from the nearby hills while farmers were working in the fields.
"We managed to save ourselves and there were no casualties among the farmers. However, one buffalo and a domestic dog succumbed to bullet injuries," a villager said on condition of anonymity.
In a statement, the Langka (Taniuluang) Village Authority alleged the attack was carried out by cadres of the Kuki National Front (Presidential), or KNF(P), a signatory to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the government....
