'Who else?' England find new saviour in brilliant Bellingham
New Delhi, July 13 -- Jude Bellingham did not as much as crash what was billed as a Harry Kane versus Erling Haaland party at a sweltering Miami on Saturday afternoon. The young superstar of world football imposed himself on an intense World Cup quarter-final as his teammate failed to make a mark on the rival box and his good friend in the opposition limped out, unable to free himself of the defensive shackles.
The 23-year-old England midfielder with a versatile game, vision and amazing composure assured himself of one of the compelling stories of this World Cup. On Saturday, he earned the ultimate accolade with two goals of beauty. Having also scored twice in the exciting win over Mexico in the round of 16, he emulated Diego Maradona's feat of scoring twice each in two successive World Cup knockout games.
Maradona as the 1986 Argentina skipper almost single-handedly took his team to glory. After his magical show against Norway, it is Bellingham - a low centre of gravity despite his height (6'1") accounts for great close control while a physicality provides some presence - who the world excitedly waits to see if he can surmount the ultimate challenge of facing off with Lionel Messi.
The England-Argentina semi-final should be the match of this World Cup, as Messi drives his side towards back-to-back success while Bellingham looks to make history for his country that has agonised for glory since 1966.
England manager Thomas Tuchel admitted his team needs to improve on several fronts. But "mentality", the German said, his players showed in shovels to tame a tough Norway 2-1 after extra time. Haaland's Manchester City teammates in England's defence, Marc Guehi and John Stones, kept the tall forward quiet - Haaland finished with 7 goals in the tournament - but that didn't stop Norway from taking the 36th-minute lead.
Kane was dispossessed at the centre, and as he lay demanding a foul and his teammates hesitated, a pass to the left was controlled by Andreas Schjelderup, whose stunning strike from the edge of the box flew over Jordon Pickford, struck the far upright and went in.
A sluggish England found energy in first-half stoppage time. Their tireless midfielder Elliot Anderson collected a clearance by Norway goalkeeper Orjand Nyland, moved up and put through Anthony Gordon on the left. Gordon's pass cut through three defenders and reached Bellingham at the top of the box.
His first touch took him into the box and away from two defenders and the next set him up for a powerful left-footed finish across Nyland into the far bottom corner.
Bellingham had famously asked "who else" after a brilliant strike during England's run to the Euro 2024 final. As he posed with arms held wide in celebration, the fans found their voice again.
England's second half substitutions, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka - in for an unwell Declan Rice and ineffective Noni Madueke - took time to settle down while Norway subs Antonio Nusa and Oscar Bobb were constant threats down either wing. They seemed a touch unlucky after a VAR check ruled out Torbjorn Heggem's goal due to Haaland's foul on Anderson while the corner from which it came was being taken.
But Morgan Rogers, an 89th minute sub, made a huge difference for England. The other No.10 besides Bellingham took a powerful shot from outside the box early in extra-time, which Nyland, whose heroics helped Norway beat Brazil in the last 16, spilled. Bellingham goal-poacher's instinct saw him finish from close.
Already a Champions League winner and having rubbed shoulders in a midfield with Toni Kroos and Luca Modric, Bellingham was seen with suspicion bordering hostility by the British pundits and media as Tuchel prepared to name his squad. The German himself dubbed Bellingham's outbursts on the pitch as "repulsive" - he apologised for his choice of word. From temperament to whether he even fitted as No.10 ahead of Morgan Rogers, they all can't stop hailing Bellingham as saviour of England.
England, semi-finalists in Russia 2018 and quarterfinals at Qatar 2022, will hope the Real Madrid man who has become the face of a team with generational talent can 'bring it home'. In the race for the Golden Boot, Kane has six goals and Bellingham has drawn level as he drives the team on.
Tuchel was gushing about Bellingham: "World class performance from a world class player. In big, big moments, in crucial moments, he was absolutely top class."...
