'Plan on rehab for families living in SGNP in a month'
Mumbai, Feb. 28 -- Around 15,00 families residing within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) will be rehabilitated on 30 acres of private land outside the park premises and a zonal master plan regarding the same will be presented to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis within a month for approval, forest minister Ganesh Naik told the legislative assembly on Friday.
Among the rehabilitees, 13,486 families who live in slum settlements in the park will be relocated to the western suburbs while 1,795 tribal families who live in forest hamlets will be housed in ground-plus-one storey buildings on 90 acres in the Aarey Colony area, Naik said after Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Sunil Prabhu told the assembly that the 15,000 families had been waiting for rehabilitation for more than a decade.
Private landowners will receive Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) in return for land parcels used for rehabilitating slum dwellers, Naik said.
"The zonal master plan for rehabilitation is in the final stages and will be presented to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for a final decision within one month," the forest minister told the assembly.
The Bombay High Court had, in 1997, ordered the rehabilitation of all residents living within the SGNP premises. The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) subsequently rehabilitated 11,359 families at Chandivali. In 2008, another 13,486 families were declared eligible for rehabilitation, while rehabilitation was proposed for the 1,795 tribal families living in forest hamlets. But the SRA project where they would be housed was delayed due to height restrictions. In 2018, a high-level committee recommended rehabilitation of the residents through the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada), on 90 acres of land in Aarey. But Mhada did not get any response to its tenders....
