Youth succumbs to clash injuries, death triggers another clash, tension
Gorakhpur, April 28 -- The death of a 20-year-old Atul Kapoor, during treatment at Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in the early hours of Monday triggered tension in Gaighat village under the Dhanghata police station limits in Sant Kabir Nagar district.
As news of Kapoor's death reached the village, tensions flared. Hundreds of agitated villagers blocked the Gaighat-Mundera road for nearly five hours, disrupting traffic movement. Protesters also vandalised the house of a local resident, Yogendra.
Considering the escalating situation, additional district magistrate (administration) Chandresh Kumar Singh and senior police officials rushed to the spot to pacify the crowd. However, the situation turned violent as protesters began pelting stones at police personnel and official vehicles, prompting a mild cane-charge to disperse them.
Later, superintendent of police Sandeep Meena and district magistrate Alok Kumar visited the village and brought the situation under control. Authorities have assured strict action against those involved and have deployed heavy police force in the area to maintain law and order.
According to officials, Kapoor sustained injuries during a clash between two groups from the same village.
The dispute allegedly began after some individuals passed indecent remarks at women returning home from a wedding function late on Sunday night.
Circle officer Abhay Nath Mishra said that a verbal altercation soon escalated into a physical fight, with both groups attacking each other with rods and sticks.
While Kapoor succumbed to his injuries during treatment at BRD Medical College, four others - Babli Nishad (24), Deepak (26), Dheeraj (22), and Amit Nishad (21) - were seriously injured and are currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Sant Kabir Nagar.
On a written complaint filed by the deceased's uncle, a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against six named accused and four unidentified persons.
