PRAYAGRAJ, May 17 -- A 23-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her husband over dowry demands in the Kokhraj police station area of Kaushambi. Police registered a case and launched a search for the accused following a complaint filed by the victim's family. The deceased was identified as Shimla Devi, who was married to Pradeep Kumar, a resident of Jhanjhagarh village, on April 30, 2025. Her mother, Malti Devi, a resident of Faridpur Sulem under the Charwa police station area, alleged that her daughter was subjected to harassment for dowry soon after the marriage, including a demand of Rs.1 lakh in cash and a gold chain. According to the complaint, family members and local community elders made repeated efforts to resolve the dispute through panchayats, but the harassment continued unabated. Malti Devi alleged that on the night of May 14, her daughter was brutally beaten by her husband before being strangled to death. Following the incident, the victim's family approached the police and submitted a written complaint. Based on the complaint, a case of dowry death has been registered against the accused, who is currently absconding.
