Wedding celebrations turn to mourning as 3 drown in canal
Jhansi, May 8 -- Three men, out on an excursion from a wedding celebration, drowned in a canal fed by the Rajghat Dam, near Harshpur village, in Lalitpur district, on Thursday. Two others were injured after a chain of rescue attempts went wrong.
The incident took place around noon on Thursday, a day after the wedding party had arrived from Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. A small group of men decided to take a walk towards the canal. The situation turned dire when one man entered the water to bathe, slipped and drowned. In a desperate bid to save him, his companions jumped into the water one after another. Ultimately, five individuals found themselves struggling in the canal.
Witnesses on the bank raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby villagers who managed to pull two men to safety. Police and professional divers arrived shortly after to recover the remaining three.
All five victims were rushed to the local Community Health Centre, where doctors declared three men dead. The deceased have been identified as, Dharmendra Vishwakarma (27), Mithun Vishwakarma (32), both from Chanderi and Dhiraj from Barr area of Lalitpur.
Out of the two survivors, Jagdish (38) of Harshpur village has sustained severe injuries and is in critical condition.
Ashish Mishra, circle officer, Talbehat, noted that preliminary findings suggest the victims may have suffered blunt force trauma upon entering the water. The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination. htc...
