Varanasi, May 23 -- The Cyber Crime Cell of Varanasi Police recovered over Rs. 3.5 lakh lost in three different cyber crimes. On May 8, cyber fraudsters duped a man of Rs.1.20 lakh by posing as bank representatives offering to increase his credit card limit. Acting swiftly on the complaint, the Cyber Crime Cell of Varanasi Police ensured the entire amount was refunded to the victim. Assistant commissioner of police (Cyber Crime) Vidush Saxena on Friday said the complainant, Chandra Bhushan Singh, a resident of Maharajipur village under Maharajganj police station in Ayodhya district, had visited Varanasi for darshan at Kashi Vishwanath Temple when he received a fraudulent call on his mobile phone. The caller, pretending to assist in enhancing the complainant's credit card limit, tricked him into losing Rs.1,20,000 from his credit card account. During investigation, the cyber cell found that the fraud amount had been used to purchase gift cards from Infiniti Retail Ltd.. The Cyber Crime Cell immediately coordinated with the company and succeeded in getting the gift cards cancelled and the funds frozen. Following continued correspondence, the entire defrauded amount was refunded to the complainant's account on May 19, 2026, ACP Saxena said. In another case of APK fraud, cyber criminals cheated a victim of Rs.1,95,132. In a separate incident reported from the Cholapur area, fraudsters posing as officials for passport update verification duped a person of Rs.50,000.
