UP weavers seek Rs.400 per kW power tariff
VARANASI, Aug. 24 -- Weaver representatives from across Uttar Pradesh met in Varanasi on Sunday and unanimously demanded a flat electricity rate of Rs.400 per kilowatt, inclusive of taxes, against the existing Rs.860. They also sought settlement of government dues, permission to increase the load limit up to 75kW, and immediate steps to stop weavers migrating due to high power costs.
The meeting was held by Bunkar Udyog Mandal and hosted by Bunkar Biradarana Tanzeem. General secretary Zubair Adil said recent meetings with minister Rakesh Sachan had raised hopes of a tariff cut, but no decision had been taken.
Representatives warned that failure to implement the demands could force weavers to shut their powerlooms....
