Dehradun, July 16 -- The state experienced light to moderate rain till 8.30 am on Tuesday, resulting in 73 roads closed and two deaths due to a swollen rain-fed stream in Chamoli district on Monday evening. Five children were swept away on Monday at 7:30 PM in a rain-fed stream near Panai village in Karnaprayag tehsil, out of which three children were rescued while two others died due to drowning, said district disaster emergency operation centre officials in Chamoli district. The duty officer district emergency operation centre Chamoli district said, " The Gauchar SDRF outpost received information that two to three children were trapped in a rain-fed stream near Panai village after which a sub-team from the SDRF post in Gauchar, led by Sub-Inspector Jagmohan Singh were immediately dispatched to the scene who on arrival, discovered that a total of five children were trapped in the stream, working swiftly with local residents the SDRF team successfully rescued three children while remaining two children who the strong currents had swept away were recovered in unconscious state, approximately 3 kilometres from the incident site were rushed to the nearest government hospital where they were declared brought dead." The police control room duty officer said, "The deceased have been identified as Divyanshu Bisht, age 15, resident of Gauchar, and Gaurav Gusain, age 14 resident of Narayan Bagad in Chamoli district and the two, along with other rescued had gone to swim in the river and were caught in the swollen stream triggered by rains." Light to moderate rainfall was experienced across in several districts on Tuesday including Didihat in Pithoragarh recording 11.5 mm of rain, Song recording 10 mm in Dehradun district, Agastyamuni recording 7.5 mm in Rudraprayag district, Kalsi recording 5 mm, Sahastradhara recording 4 mm in Dehradun district and Takula recording 2 mm of rain from 8.30 am to 3 pm on Tuesday. Chamoli district was most affected, with 15 rural roads closed, comprising 6 PWD roads and 9 PMGSY, RWD roads on Tuesday, according to the emergency control operation centre in Chamoli district. In Pauri district followed by Pauri district 15 village roads were closed, while in Bageshwar district, 4 village roads were closed. Vikas Singh Junior Engineer PMGSY Tehri division 2 said, " The teams are deployed at the spot but the land debris accumulates on the road with any given spell of rain forcing the workers t remove the debris again and we expect that the road will open by 20 July as currently the mud is very wet and we are waiting for weather to clear for eve a brief period....
