India, Sept. 21 -- The emphatic victory of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in three out of four positions in the Delhi University Students Union and the failure of the National Students Union of India to secure even a single post - a first since 2015 - points towards the success of the youth wing of the RSS in mobilising local issues and turning public sentiment in the aftermath of the Satya Niketan building collapse, and the failure of the Opposition outfit in putting together a coherent show. This newspaper reported how the crumbling of an illegally expanded building - which killed five students and two others - dominated the DUSU poll campaign, prompting all major outfits to promise solutions to the chronic accommodation problem in Delhi. The success of the ABVP must be seen against the backdrop of the party successfully mobilising its cadre in protesting against the civic administration - against whom anger was mounting - and managing student discontent not just with resources but also highlighting the government's measures in the aftermath of the tragedy. Similarly, the surprise victory of Deepanshu Shokeen as an independent after NSUI denied him a ticket - his margin was over 13,000 votes, the largest among the four positions - again points to the inability of the Opposition outfits in keeping their house in order and choose the best possible candidate by sidelining internal factionalism. The DUSU polls were keenly watched because they came against the backdrop of the protests at Jantar Mantar over exam paper leaks that eventually led to the resignation of the then Union education minister. It is tempting to read wider nationwide trends into the results but the polls actually show that elections are won or lost on immediate local issues and there is no alternative to energetic, disciplined campaigning....
