stir held in bihar over killing of local activist
PATNA/ARA, June 25 -- A protest was held at Bhojpur district's Bilauti village in Bihar on Wednesday, a week after the alleged killing of local activist Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, with the agitators demanding the arrest of the police officers named in the case, compensation and a job for the deceased's family, a person aware of the details said.
Bharat, who was campaigning for the rehabilitation of flood-affected people in Jawania village, was shot multiple times during a police encounter on June 17. He died during treatment same day. Police alleged that he possessed an illegal firearm and made threatening videos towards administrative officials. The police alleged he shot at them when they went to arrest him, but protesters claim he was shot at even after he surrendered.
During the Mahapanchayat by the Bharat Tiwari Sangharsh Samiti, protesters blocked the national highway. They warned of another blockade if demands were not met within two days.
Education minister Mithilesh Tiwari said: "Chief minister has ordered a judicial inquiry. Police personnel have been suspended, and the DSP has also been removed... We should await the judicial inquiry report. Action will be taken after that."
