LAKHIMPUR KHERI, Sept. 7 -- The flood situation in Lakhimpur Kheri's Palia, Nighasan, Lakhimpur and Dhaurahra tehsils eased slightly on Sunday as the Sharda river level fell to 17 cm above the danger mark, though agricultural fields, roads and several villages remained inundated. The Sharda, which was flowing 35 cm above its danger mark of 154.59 metres a couple of days ago following heavy discharge from the Banbasa barrage, receded by 5 pm on Sunday, according to district authorities. Palia SDM (sub-divisional magistrate) Pushpak said the fall in the river level prevented floodwaters from entering villages in the tehsil. However, agricultural fields, approach roads and areas along the river remained inundated. The river continued to affect villages in Nighasan, Gola, Lakhimpur and Dhaurahra, leaving areas such as Rehariya, Grant No 12, Daultapur and Naugavan inaccessible. In Dhaurahra, several villages between the Sharda and Ghaghra rivers remained waterlogged, with erosion reported at some places. However, officials said the situation was under control. Meanwhile, Nepal-origin rivers Mohana and Karnali continued to affect border areas of Nighasan. Kheri DM (district magistrate) Anjani Kumar Singh, along with Nighasan SDM Yaduveer Singh, visited Grant No. 12 and Randauha villages.
