Shahjahanpur murder accused shot in leg during escape attempt
MEERUT, Aug. 2 -- A 20-year-old man accused of murder allegedly attacked a police constable with a knife and attempted to escape custody in Shahjahanpur district early Saturday, said police.
Police fired in self-defence, injuring the suspect in the leg before re-arresting him. Both the constable and the accused are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The suspect, Sameer Idrisi, allegedly murdered 20-year-old Gautam Maurya on Friday night, claiming Maurya had harassed his cousin and posted her photograph on Instagram.
According to police, Maurya was allegedly infatuated with a 19-year-old woman who lived about 500 metres from his house. On July 12, Gautam allegedly uploaded the young woman's photograph on his Instagram account. When her cousin, Sameer Idrisi, 20, learned about it, he reportedly asked Gautam to delete the image. Police said Gautam allegedly replied, "I'll post even more photos now. What can you do to me?" The exchange led to a dispute, but the photograph was not removed. The two reportedly had another argument over the issue on July 15. According to police, on Friday night at around 9 pm, Gautam closed his shop and was riding his motorcycle toward the fields. Sameer allegedly asked him for a lift along the way while three of his associates were already waiting in ambush near a field. About 100 metres before reaching a field near Dilawarpur village, Sameer, who was riding pillion, allegedly launched a sudden knife attack, repeatedly stabbing Gautam in the head and shoulder. Gautam collapsed on the village pathway.
The victim succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the district hospital.
Early Saturday morning, police escorted Idrisi to the crime scene to recover the murder weapon. Authorities stated that after locating the knife, Idrisi seized it and attacked Constable Devendra, injuring his hand, before attempting to flee. HTC...
