LUCKNOW, Aug. 3 -- Patients left with double vision and facial deformities after serious accidents may no longer need to travel outside Uttar Pradesh for advanced treatment, with Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, performing state's first navigation-guided eye socket reconstruction using a customised implant and O-arm imaging, officials informed on Sunday. The procedure was carried out at Apex Trauma Centre (ATC) on a patient who continued to suffer from persistent double vision, facial asymmetry and difficulty in eye movement despite receiving initial treatment elsewhere after a severe facial injury. Doctors used a customised patient-specific implant designed from the patient's three-dimensional CT scans. During the operation, an intraoperative navigation system, often described as a surgical GPS, helped surgeons accurately place the implant, while O-arm imaging provided real-time three-dimensional scans to confirm its position before the surgery was completed. This reduced the chances of residual deformity and the need for repeat surgery. According to SGPGIMS, this is the first time in Uttar Pradesh that intraoperative navigation, O-arm imaging and a patient-specific implant have been used together for secondary orbital wall reconstruction. The surgery was led by Dr Kuldeep Vishwakarma and Dr Bharat Shukla of the speciality of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
