SGPGIMS director rides bicycle to office, launches green commute campaign

LUCKNOW Radha Krishan Dhiman, director of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, cycled from his residence to the institute on Thursday, initiating a sustainable mobility campaign aimed at reducing vehicle use and promoting eco-friendly commuting.
The initiative aligns with appeals made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Yogi Adityanath, urging citizens and government employees to adopt greener transport options such as cycling, walking, carpooling and public transport amid global energy concerns.
Addressing faculty, staff and students, Prof Dhiman said that in the first phase, the focus will be on discouraging unnecessary vehicle use and encouraging walking or cycling wherever feasible. He said the move is expected to reduce fuel consumption, curb pollution and improve physical fitness.
To support the campaign, the institute plans to install seven to eight dedicated bicycle stands at key locations across the campus. He also appealed to employees residing within three to four kilometres of the institute to consider cycling or walking for daily travel.
He further called for adopting carpooling practices to reduce traffic congestion and limit the campus carbon footprint. Referring to SGPGIMS as a green campus known for its biodiversity, he reiterated the institute's focus on environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Prof Dhiman said he would continue commuting by bicycle, stating that leading by example can help build a culture of sustainability within the campus community....
