Security beefed up in Valley ahead of Pahalgam attack anniv
Srinagar, April 22 -- Security across Jammu and Kashmir have been stepped up, especially in south Kashmir and Pahalgam, ahead of the first anniversary of the Pahalgam attack, with forces intensifying surveillance, deployment of additional troops, increase in nightvigil.
On April 22 last year, terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in the Baisaran area near Pahalgam, killing 26 people, mostly tourists.
The attack, one of the deadliest targeting civilians in recent years, had sent shockwaves across the nation.
Officials said additional troop deployment has been made, besides an increase in night vigil by both the police and the army.
They added that cordon and search operations were also launched at many places as a precautionary measure.
Anantnag senior superintendent of police (SSP) also reviewed security arrangements at all tourist places in the district.
In memory of the tourists and the local killed during the attack, civil society and people associated with the tourism and travel industry will be holding programs in Pahalgam town, including a tree plantation drive.
The government has already established a memorial at the entrance to the resort, andthe names of all tourists and the local guide have been inscribed on the marble plaque..
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday said that last year's Pahalgam attack was a major setback for Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah, who was in South Kashmir for a party function, paid his tributes to those who lost their lives in the April 22, 2025, terror attack at Baisaran in Pahalgam.
"I believe that was a major setback for the state," Abdullah told media on the anniversary of the attack. "I want to pay my tributes to those who were martyred there and also to the young man who stood in front of the terrorists and didn't back down," he said.
On the first anniversary of Pahalgam terror attack, BJP's Jammu and Kashmir paid tributes to the 26 people who were gunned down by terrorists and said that justice was delivered as "Operation Sindoor" ensured swift elimination of attackers.
BJP chief spokesman Altaf Thakur described the day as a painful reminder of the human cost of terrorism and a moment to reaffirm the nation's resolve against such acts.
Altaf while expressing condolences, said, "The attack had shaken the conscience of the nation but also united people in their determination to defeat terrorism." Lashkar-e-Taiba cadres shot dead 25 tourists and a local guide at Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam Tourist resort on April 22 last year.
Highlighting the response of security forces, Thakur said that those behind the attack were identified and eliminated in a swift and decisive operation carried out under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi....
