LUCKNOW, Feb. 9 -- Sarojini Nagar MLA Rajeshwar Singh has submitted a comprehensive 20-year "integrated traffic and urban mobility" strategy to chief minister Yogi Adityanath that aims to transform the capital into a safe, organised and traffic-ready metropolis. Highlighting the rapid pace of urbanisation, Singh said traffic management in Lucknow must move beyond short-term measures and adopt a long-term, coordinated and data-driven approach. Citing VAHAN data, the BJP MLA pointed out that the city had around 3.18 million registered vehicles by 2025, with nearly 1,20,000 to 1,50,000 new vehicles being added every year, significantly increasing congestion, parking pressure and accident risks. A key proposal in the roadmap is the formation of a multi-department traffic management task force comprising personnel from the police, urban development department, Lucknow Development Authority, municipal corporation, PWD, transport department, Metro, and the Smart City cell. The proposal also calls for mandatory monthly review meetings of task force to ensure data-driven, time-bound and accountable decision-making, preventing delays in implementation. Among the major recommendations are expansion of the Metro and BRT networks, deployment of AI-based smart traffic signal systems, development of scientifically planned vending zones, permanent removal of illegal encroachments, creation of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and promotion of electric mobility and green transport. Singh said that with the rapidly growing vehicle population, reactive measures were no longer sufficient. htc...
