Rs.420 crore allocated for Karnataka caste survey
Bengaluru, Sept. 13 -- The Karnataka government has allocated a sum of Rs.420 crore to the comprehensive social and educational survey scheduled to begin later this month, said chief minister Siddaramaiah on Friday, adding that the bulk of the money was set aside for the teachers responsible for conducting the exercise.
The project, popularly referred to as the caste census, will rely on the deployment of 175,000 government school teachers during the Dasara holidays, said Siddaramiah. Each teacher will be entitled to receive remuneration of up to Rs.20,000. "This is the major cost component, amounting to around Rs.325 crore," he said.
The survey, scheduled between September 22 and October 7, will be carried out by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes,led by chairperson Madhusudhan R Naik. "...The commission has said they will submit it before December," Siddaramaiah said.
"The survey will be conducted scientifically, with a 60-question questionnaire prepared for the exercise," the chief minister explained. He said the questionnaire was designed to capture information about the social, educational, poli- tical, and economic condi- tions of every household in the state.
To strengthen accuracy and avoid duplication, the state will employ new technology modelled on methods used in a 2015 sub-reservation survey.
"Every house will be geo-tagged using its electricity meter and assigned a unique household identification number," Siddaramaiah said, noting that 155,000 households had already been tagged and that families without electricity connections would also be included....
