LUCKNOW, July 15 -- After a brief lull, rain returned to parts of the state capital on Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief from the lingering humidity after two dry days. However, the city's official weather observatory near Amausi airport, recorded no rainfall, leaving the IMD's rainfall column at nil. The weatherman said parts of the state capital were estimated to have received up to 20 mm of rainfall on Tuesday, though the official figure will be released on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of 37.9degC and a minimum of 29degC. Though scattered showers returned to Lucknow on Tuesday, the southwest monsoon is expected to regain momentum across Uttar Pradesh this weekend. Weather officials said a fresh low-pressure area is likely to trigger widespread rainfall, beginning in the eastern districts before gradually advancing westwards over following days. A fresh low-pressure area is likely to develop around Thursday, reviving monsoon activity across Uttar Pradesh from Friday. Rain is expected to begin in parts of East UP before spreading westwards over the following days, though spell is likely to be less intense than last week's, said Atul Kumar Singh, senior scientist at Regional Meteorological Centre, Lucknow. Monsoon activity has weakened significantly over the past three days. Between 8:30 am on Monday and 8:30 am on Tuesday, 63 of Uttar Pradesh's 75 districts recorded no rainfall, including 32 in East UP and 31 in West UP. The state received an average of just 1.5 mm of rain during the period, with East UP recording 2.5 mm and West UP only 0.2 mm. Among the state's observatories, Bansi in Siddharthnagar recorded the highest rainfall at 99.2 mm in the 24-hour period, followed by Nichlaul in Maharajganj with 87.5 mm and Trimohani Ghat, also in Maharajganj, with 71 mm. The sudden rainfall led to waterlogging in several parts of the city, including Hazratganj, Indira Nagar and the area around Bhootnath Metro Station. The forecast for Wednesday is a partly cloudy sky, becoming mainly clear later in the day. The weather department has also warned of hot and humid conditions over the area. htc...
