PATNA, March 23 -- The 114th Bihar Diwas celebrations were formally inaugurated by chief minister Nitish Kumar at Gandhi Maidan in Patna on Sunday, with top leaders including deputy chief ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha in attendance. The three-day event marks the foundation of the state and showcases its cultural legacy and development journey. President Droupadi Murmu Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, home minister Amit Shah, Governor Lt Gen (Rtd) Syed Ata Hasnain were among several dignitaries who extended greetings on the occasion, praising Bihar's heritage and its aspirations for growth. Kumar inaugurated the programme by lighting a lamp and releasing a bunch of balloons into the air. The state government has organised multiple events featuring folk music, traditional dances and exhibitions showcasing Bihar's history and art. Bihar Diwas is observed every year on March 22 to commemorate the creation of the state in 1912, when it was carved out of the Bengal Presidency during British rule. The idea of celebrating the state's foundation day was proposed by Kumar after he assumed office in 2005, and the first official celebration was held on March 22, 2010. This year's theme, "Developed Bihar, Bright Bihar", reflects the state's focus on inclusive growth and its push towards self-reliance. In a message posted on X, PM Modi said "On the occasion of Bihar Diwas, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all the people of the state. This state of ours has enriched Indian heritage with its grandeur and divinity and it is today striving to script new chapters of progress every day."
