LUCKNOW, Aug. 4 -- A 64-year-old pensioner from Ashiyana was duped of over Rs.2.17 lakh by cyber fraudsters after he clicked on a fake SMS link and shared an OTP. The Cyber Crime Police Station on Sunday night registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the case. According to police, Aparesh Kumar Dennis Das (64), a resident of Eldeco Udyan-I, received an SMS containing a link on July 23. Believing it to be genuine, he clicked on the link, which redirected him to a webpage asking for an OTP. Moments after he entered the OTP, the webpage closed abruptly. About 20 minutes later, Das received an email alert informing him that Rs.2,17,868 had been debited from his pension account. Realising he had fallen victim to cyber fraud, Das approached the Cyber Crime Police Station. Following a preliminary inquiry, SHO Alok Rao registered an FIR under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 66C of the Information Technology Act. According to police, investigators are analysing the phishing link, transaction trail and other digital evidence to trace fraudsters and determine whether website was part of a larger cyber scam targeting bank customers.
