LUCKNOW, May 10 -- Over a year after claims of nearly "two lakh illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants residing in the state capital" triggered large-scale verification campaigns, authorities have still not identified a single confirmed Bangladeshi national living illegally in Lucknow. Nevertheless, mayor Sushma Kharkwal, accompanied by municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar and senior officials of the LMC, visited illegal shanties near Nishatganj Paper Mill Colony for a surprise early morning inspection on Saturday and directed officials to take action against the alleged illegal immigrants there. The mayor also instructed officials to inspect electricity connections in the shanties and warned that punitive action should be taken if any illegal power connections were found. She directed people residing "illegally" in the area to vacate the premises within one week. Kharkwal later told HT that her role was limited to conducting visits to areas and directing alleged illegal immigrants living in slums and those running scrap businesses illegally to leave the city, while further action had to be taken by the police. When asked why police drives had not identified any such individuals despite repeated claims over the past year regarding illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants living in the state capital, Kharkwal said that taking action was the police's responsibility. When asked why the inspection was done on Saturday, she said that it was a routine exercise. She said she was crossing the area when she saw the slum and then went there. HT also asked the mayor about slums that had emerged in posh localities of the city and the lack of action from either the mayor's office or the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC). In response, Kharkwal said that she had been continuously visiting key areas and would keep conducting inspections. The mayor also reviewed sanitation and development projects across several city zones during the Saturday morning visit. In Zone-7's C Block area in Indira Nagar, she inspected ongoing drainage construction work and directed engineers to maintain quality standards while ensuring the project's timely completion....
