Dehradun/Pithoragarh, Sept. 1 -- Over a dozen workers were trapped inside a tunnel of the Dhauliganga Power Station of National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) after a boulders from a landslide blocked its mouth amid heavy rainfall in Dharchula of Pithoragarh district on Sunday, officials said. Pithoragarh superintendent of police Rekha Yadav said the landslide led to the blockage, leaving the workers stranded inside. "Large boulders have blocked the tunnel's mouth. Efforts are underway to clear the debris. JCB machines have been dispatched to the spot for rescue operations," she said. She added that the trapped workers are safe, in constant touch with the company and the administration, and have sufficient rations inside. "We cannot yet assess the full magnitude of the incident," the SP said. Uttarakhand has been hit hard by natural disasters this monsoon. Before the disaster in Tharali in Chamoli, a devastating flash flood in the Kheer Ganga river in Uttarkashi district on August 5 demolished nearly half of Dharali, a key stopover enroute to Gangotri with many hotels and homestays, and neighbouring Harsil, where an Army camp bore the brunt of the flood fury, barely giving time to the victims to run to safety. Dharchula sub-divisional magistrate Jitendra Verma said power generation at the plant has not been affected. "The power production from the station is normal and continuing. We have deployed machines to remove the debris, and by this evening, the way will be cleared to rescue the workers," he said. "Once the blockage is removed, the workers, who are safe, will come out," Verma added. Six people died and 11 went missing after heavy rain, landslides and cloudbursts pounded Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar and Tehri districts early on Friday....
