LUCKNOW, May 13 -- The deputy commissioner of police (West) has attached then Tikaitganj outpost in-charge Deepankar Sharma to the West Zone office on Tuesday with immediate effect. The decision follows the May 10 shooting incident involving BJP youth leader Chetan Tiwari in Mehndiganj area, under the Bazaar Khala police station limits. Police said in a statement that an inquiry into possible disciplinary action against the sub-inspector has also been assigned to the assistant commissioner of police, Kakori, following allegations of negligence in handling earlier complaints linked to the rivalry between the accused, Vaibhav Bajpai alias Kaustubh Bajpai, and the victim. The action came after Chetan Tiwari's family accused police of failing to act on an earlier attack allegedly carried out by Bajpai, nearly a year ago. During investigation into the shooting case, police said a dispute over the use of the title "Maharaj" allegedly triggered a bitter fallout between the two former friends. According to the police, Bajpai told investigators that he and Tiwari shared a close friendship until 2023, when Tiwari started using "Maharaj" with his name despite objections from him and his family. Bajpai allegedly claimed that the title had long been associated with his grandfather, Puttan Bajpai, and said repeated objections to its use were ignored. Police said the disagreement gradually escalated into a rivalry marked by FIRs and repeated confrontations. Investigators said Bajpai also told police that in 2024, Tiwari had lodged two FIRs against him and his family members, further deepening the hostility. Police described the dispute as a "battle for dominance" between the two sides. Chetan Tiwari, a member of the BJP Yuva Morcha metropolitan executive committee, was allegedly shot at on Saturday night while supervising construction work outside his house in Mehndiganj. Police said Bajpai reached the spot and opened fire at Tiwari with a country-made firearm. Tiwari collapsed after sustaining bullet injuries, while an employee, Udayraj Rawat, who attempted to intervene, narrowly escaped unhurt. In her complaint, Tiwari's wife, Mansi alias Shweta Tiwari, alleged that she and her husband were sitting outside their house with their newborn daughter when Bajpai arrived with five to six associates and threatened to kill the family before opening fire. Bajpai has since been arrested and sent to jail....
