One killed, 11 injured after Jagannath Yatra chariot touches power line
Meerut, July 25 -- A religious celebration in Meerut's Parikshitgarh town turned into tragedy on Friday when a Jagannath Rath Yatra chariot came into contact with an 11,000-volt high-tension electricity line, killing one devotee and injuring 11 others. The incident occurred shortly after the procession began amid rainfall, triggering panic among nearly 2,000 devotees participating in the annual event.
The deceased has been identified as Sachin Prajapati, 30, a resident of Parikshitgarh. Eleven other devotees suffered burns, with some reported to be in critical condition. The injured were admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Parikshitgarh, the district hospital, and private medical facilities.
"Most of the injured are out of danger. One woman has been referred to a higher medical facility. Teams from the police, health department and district administration are present at the site. The entire incident is being investigated, and necessary action will be taken after the inquiry," the district magistrate VK Singh said.
