LUCKNOW, April 21 -- After a day full of protests by students associated with various student organizations, Lucknow University on Monday announced that there will be, from this year on, no LURN (Lucknow University Registration Number) fee levied upon the students participating in LU's centralised admission process. The move came two days after the undergraduate admission brochure was released by the university wherein it was revealed that the admission form fee and semester fee at the time of admission have been substantially increased. Protest continued throughout the day since morning till late afternoon starting with students of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad followed by Samajwadi Chatrasabha and National Students Union of India - all of whom demanded rolling back of the fee hike. LU spokesperson Prof Mukul Srivastava said Lucknow University has always been committed to prioritising the interests of its students. "VC Prof JP Saini today held an open discussion with representatives of various student bodies on issues related to fee hikes. The purpose was to understand students' concerns and to offer concrete solutions from the university administration," said Srivastava. Prof. Saini said it has been decided to extend library hours. "They will now be open daily from 7 am to 8 pm. Even on holidays (except important ones), the library will be open from 10 am to 2 pm," he said. He said students participating in LU's centralized admission process will no longer be charged a separate LURN fee of Rs 100. htc...
