Dehradun, Aug. 22 -- National Green Tribunal (NGT) Principal Bench New Delhi has directed the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) to take a reasoned decision on the proposed operation of Hotel Le Roi Floating Huts & Eco Rooms in Uttarakhand's Tehri Reservoir, after examining all environmental aspects, including the type of fuel to be used and pollution arising from cooking and food-related activities. The direction was issued by a bench comprising NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member Dr Afroz Ahmad while hearing plea on August 17. The matter arose from a news report concerning the operation of a floating hotel in Tehri Lake. The tribunal noted that NMCG had earlier determined that the activity falls under Paragraph 42(g), read with Paragraph 4(ix), of the River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection and Management) Authorities Order, 2016, and therefore requires NMCG approval. During the hearing, NMCG informed the tribunal that the District Ganga Committee, Tehri, had examined the matter and recommended permission for operation of the floating huts subject to specified conditions. The State Ganga Committee had subsequently endorsed the recommendation. The proposed conditions included a complete prohibition on discharge of polluted water, sewage or any waste into the Tehri Reservoir. The operator would also be required to ensure that the natural flow and hydrological regime of the reservoir was not obstructed or adversely affected. Single-use plastic would be prohibited on the premises, while all applicable NMCG and State Mission for Clean Ganga directions, guidelines and environmental laws would also have to be followed. However, the tribunal found that the conditions did not adequately address the type of fuel proposed to be used by the floating facility. It also raised concerns about pollution that could result from cooking, the use and disposal of food items and consequential discharge into the reservoir. The NGT directed NMCG to specifically examine these aspects before taking its final decision....
