Hyderabad, Oct. 30 -- Severe cyclonic storm "Montha" which made landfall near Narasapur between Kakinada and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday evening, left a trail of destruction across the coastal Andhra, leaving two people dead and causing widespread damage to homes, crops, and infrastructure. Hundreds of trees and electricity poles were uprooted, powerlines were snapped, and the road and rail network disrupted. The heavy downpour resulted in flash floods to several streams, inundating several low-lying areas. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Montha weakened into a cyclone after crossing the coast and later into a deep depression. It is expected to continue moving north-northwestwards over Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and south Chhattisgarh, losing further intensity by Thursday morning. In Prakasam district, floodwaters entered tunnels of the Veligonda project, prompting the safe evacuation of 200 workers. Further west, rising levels in the Kundu River, Maddileru, and Chama Kaluva streams inundated parts of Nandyal district, cutting off road connectivity at Boyarevula bridge. Rescue and relief operations were launched swiftly by NDRF and SDRF teams, who worked through the day to clear blocked roads, remove fallen trees, and restore electricity. Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu conducted an aerial survey of the cyclone-hit areas of Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district . According to the preliminary report, at least two people have died due to cyclone-related incidents, while over 1.8 million people across 249 mandals and 48 municipalities were affected.htc...
