Srinagar, Aug. 1 -- A migrant worker from Chattisgarh was killed on Friday and another severely injured when terrorists opened fire on them in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district, police said. This is the second terror attack in south Kashmir in the last one week, and a first in the valley since the Pahalgam attack in 2025 that killed a civilian. According to police, terrorists opened fire on the brick kiln workers in Friday evening in Kilam village, which is 16 kilometres away from Kulgam town, injuring them both in the attack. One of them, identified as Deepak Ratray (24), succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital, while the other, identified as Bopinder (28), was referred to Government Medical College Anantnag and later moved to a Srinagar hospital for advanced treatment. A senior police officer said that after the attack the terrorists fled from the spot and a massive search operation has been launched. "The security forces are trying to trace the terrorists responsible for this attack." Lt Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack, saying, "I spoke with the DGP, Shri Nalin Prabhat and top security officials following the brutal terrorist attack in Kulgam in which a labourer from Chattisgarh was killed. I strongly condemn this cowardly act. I have directed our security forces to step up their operations and eliminate the terrorists. J&K Police and Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched an operation to bring the perpetrators to justice. Another injured labourer from Chhattisgarh has been rushed to the hospital for urgent medical care. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family and I am praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. J&K administration and the entire nation stand with the families." The attack follows closely on the heels of another incident less than ten days ago, in which terrorists shot and killed a police officer in Anantnag. Earlier, on July 22, terrorists shot dead a policeman, deployed on Amarnath Yatra duty, at Lal Chowk in Anantnag district.
