VARANASI, Aug. 27 -- All meat, chicken and fish shops, including slaughterhouses within the Varanasi Nagar Nigam limits, will remain closed on Thursday, August 28, on the occasion of the Jain Paryushan (Kshama) festival, the Varanasi Nagar Nigam announced in a press statement. This closure is in line with an order issued by the Urban Development Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, which directs all local bodies to shut down slaughterhouses and meat shops on days commemorating the birth anniversaries of great spiritual leaders and Yug Purushas who propagated the principle of non-violence.
