Silchar, June 2 -- A 27-year-old man accused of killing a student leader in Assam's Nalbari district and severely injuring a minor girl for spurning his advances died in a police encounter on Monday, senior officers said. Nalbari Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bibekananda Das said the accused, identified as Asif Ali alias Rose Ali, sustained bullet injuries during a police operation in Mukalmua, early on Monday and later succumbed to his injuries. According to police, Ali allegedly attempted to flee and tried to attack police personnel when he was taken along by an investigating team in connection with the murder of 18-year-old All Assam Students' Union (AASU) leader Madhurjya Barman. Ali then killed Barman and severely injured the girl and fled the spot, police said....
