PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 4 -- A 22-year-old man attending a Durga idol immersion in Meja tehsil of Prayagraj died after drowning in a pond on Thursday evening. He had jumped into the pond to bathe before the immersion. On receiving information, SHO of Meja police station Deen Dayal Singh arrived at the scene and, with the help of local divers, rescued the man and sent him to CHC Meja. However, he died during treatment. The deceased, identified as Shiv Karan Chauhan, a resident of Atri Amilia village, had gone to attend the Durga idol immersion. On the way, he decided to bathe in a nearby pond before the immersion. However, he became trapped in the pond's deep waters and weeds and was unable to get out. According to SHO Deen Dayal Singh, the weeds at the spot where the youth had jumped had formed a net-like structure underwater, which caused divers to take several hours to retrieve him. After initial examination at the CHC, doctors referred him to the district hospital, but he died en route. The police have sent the body for post-mortem. Nearly a dozen people were injured when a speeding car crashed into a crowd going for idol immersion on the highway in Mohammadpur Sarai Ali area under Mauaima police station area of Prayagraj on Thursday. About six of the victims sustained serious injuries. Local residents rushed them to the district hospital, where doctors declared the condition of three individuals as critical. As per reports, a procession of women, men, children, and elderly from Sultanpur Khas village under Mauaima police station area was heading to the Sharda Sahayak canal in Madari to immerse a Durga idol. About 500 meters from their homes, a speeding four-wheeler lost control and collided with the procession near Mohammad Sarai Ali village on the Prayagraj-Pratapgarh highway. The injured were immediately admitted to CHC Mauaima for treatment two, seriously injured, were admitted to Swaroop Rani Hospital.
