Meerut, Sept. 9 -- The man who allegedly masterminded the theft of two golden 'kalash' (urns) and other valuables worth Rs.1.5 crore during a Jain religious event near the Red Fort last week was arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Hapur, police officials said. One of the stolen urns was recovered from his possession, they added. One of the urns that was stolen was a 760-gram gold coconut, while the other, weighing 115 grams, was embedded with diamonds, emeralds and rubies. The theft on September 3 was captured on CCTV. Bhushan Verma, who lives in Vaishali Colony of Hapur's Asora village, was seen entering and leaving the venue disguised as a Jain priest, officials said. After tracing his location to Hapur, Delhi Police coordinated with its Hapur counterpart to carry out a joint operation. Verma was arrested from his residence in the wee hours of Monday. Following the arrest, Delhi Police took him into custody and left for the capital. Police officials confirmed that Verma, who works as a driver for a Delhi-based businessman, lives in his 60-yard house in Vaishali Colony with his wife and three children.Mohit Pal, a neighbour, said, "The police came around 1:30 am. They arrested Bhushan and took him. The police told us that it was regarding the theft of two golden kalash from the Red Fort." He added, "Verma told us that he was a goldsmith by profession."The station house officer (SHO) of Kotwali Dehat police station, Vijay Gupta, confirmed the arrest and the recovery of a 'kalash'. "The accused is being taken to Delhi for further questioning. Authorities are working to trace the second stolen 'kalash' and unravel any wider networks involved in the crime," he added. The SHO said Bhushan has committed several thefts. In 2016, he was jailed in a theft case. The complaint in the case was filed by Sudhir Jain, a businessman and a resident of Civil Lines.
