Lucknow couple kept under 'digital arrest' for 18 days
Lucknow, Aug. 18 -- A 70-year-old retired FCI employee and his wife from Lalbagh were allegedly kept under "digital arrest" for 18 days by cyber fraudsters who posed as ATS, NIA and CBI officers and threatened to implicate them in the Pulwama terror attack and a money laundering case. The accused allegedly duped the couple of Rs.42.09 lakh through multiple RTGS transactions.
According to the complaint, Ansar Jamal Abbasi received a WhatsApp call at around 1.32pm on July 23 from an unknown number. The caller allegedly told him that terrorists arrested in connection with the Pulwama attack had named a man identified as Manish Goyal. The caller then claimed that a SIM card issued in Abbasi's name, an ICICI Bank ATM card and his bank statement had been recovered from Goyal.
Over the next 18 days, the fraudsters allegedly kept the couple under constant surveillance through WhatsApp calls and directed them to transfer money to different bank accounts. htc...
