LPG distributors seek full supply in TTZ, cite apex court mandate
Agra, April 22 -- LPG distributors in Agra have demanded 100% supply of cooking gas in the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ), saying current cuts could lead to violation of Supreme Court orders.
In a memorandum submitted on Tuesday to the TTZ chairman and Agra divisional commissioner, the Agra unit of the All India Indane Distributors Association flagged a "critical supply gap" affecting the eco-sensitive zone. Association president Vipul Purohit said the Supreme Court, in the MC Mehta vs Union of India case, had banned polluting fuels like coal and coke in the TTZ and mandated a shift to cleaner fuel such as LPG.
He said oil marketing companies-IOCL, BPCL and HPCL-are currently supplying only about 70% of last year's LPG volumes due to the West Asia conflict. "This 30% shortfall goes against the TTZ mandate and could be seen as non-compliance with court orders," Purohit said. He added that while supplies have improved to 70% of pre-crisis levels by mid-April 2026, it remains inadequate for a "zero pollution" zone like Agra. "Industries and commercial units here have no legal backup fuel."A shortage means complete shutdown and risk of violating pollution norms," he said.
