Hyderabad, Oct. 24 -- The Telangana cabinet chaired by chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday decided not to go ahead with the elections to the local bodies in the state, till the state high court delivers its judgment on extending 42% reservations to the other backward classes (OBCs). Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, state information and public relations minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the state government would take a call on the conduct of local body elections only after going through the judgment of the state high court on the enhanced OBC quota. "The state high court will continue hearing on November 3, the petitions challenging 42% OBC quota in the local bodies. The state government is firm on going to the local body elections only with enhanced quota for the OBCs. Depending on the high court observations, the cabinet will meet again on November 7 to take a call on the local body polls," Reddy said. Earlier on October 9, the high court directed the SEC to conduct local body elections based on the old reservation pattern. The Supreme Court also on Thursday dismissed the special leave petition of the state government to conduct the local body elections with 42% reservations to the OBCs. It asked the commission to conduct the elections as per the old reservation pattern. The state cabinet also decided to promulgate an ordinance to abolish the "two-child norm" that has so far barred individuals with more than two children from contesting local body elections. "The decision marks a progressive shift aimed at making local governance more inclusive," the minister said. Though the decision was taken during the previous cabinet meeting held on October 16, it approved amending Section 21 (3) of the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act of 2018, thereby enabling those having more than two children to contest the elections. "The state government will bring an ordinance to make the amendment, which will be sent to Governor Jishnu Dev Varma for approval," the minister said, adding once the ordinance is cleared, people with more than two children will be eligible to contest rural local body elections....
