Last mile connectivity: Metro launches e-cycle pilot at LU Station
Lucknow, June 2 -- The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has introduced a new solution - battery-operated bicycles to the Metro network in Lucknow through a private partnership, in an effort to strengthen last-mile connectivity. As part of a two-month pilot project, e-cycles have been installed at the Lucknow University Metro Station, where commuters can rent and return them from the same location on a pay-per-use basis. Around 5-8 bicycles have currently been deployed in the initial phase, with a nominal fare.
To use the service, passengers must scan a QR code at the station, complete an online payment, and submit basic details such as a mobile number and ID verification. The bicycles are equipped with GPS-based tracking systems, designed to reduce the risk of theft and ensure monitoring of usage.
The initiative, developed in collaboration with a private agency, is being positioned as part of a broader push to improve last-mile access, promote environmentally friendly transport, and encourage healthier commuting habits. Officials have indicated that if the pilot proves successful, similar e-cycle stations could be introduced at other Metro stops. Future expansion may also include e-bikes and larger battery-operated shuttle vehicles.
