labourer's body taken off pyre, sent for autopsy
Lucknow, June 21 -- A 26-year-old labourer's body was taken off a funeral pyre and sent for a post-mortem examination after injury marks spotted on his body raised suspicion over the circumstances of his death in Lucknow's Ghazipur area, police said on Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Santosh Kumar, a native of Darbhanga district in Bihar, was living with his family in the Meena Market area under the Ghazipur police station limits and worked as a daily wage labourer.
According to family members, Santosh was found lying unconscious under suspicious circumstances in a park near his residence on Thursday night.
Relatives rushed him home, where they realised he had died. The body remained at the house overnight and was taken to Bhainsakund crematorium on Friday for the last rites.
Police said the family had already purchased firewood and prepared the pyre when people present at the cremation ground noticed injury marks on the body and advised them not to proceed with the cremation without informing the police.
Acting on the information, a Ghazipur police team reached the crematorium and took custody of the body and sent it for a post-mortem examination.
Santosh's brother, Jai Narayan, who works in Haryana, said he rushed to Lucknow after learning about the death.
He alleged that the injuries visible on the body warranted a police inquiry, though other family members had initially proceeded with funeral arrangements.
"Since the death appeared suspicious and the family had gone for cremation without informing the police, the body was taken into custody and sent for postmortem. Further action will be taken based on the report," said the Ghazipur station house officer RK Maurya...
